Virtual Is Visual
Online interviews are all about visuals. Because they take place remotely, physical interaction is non-existent and all you're left with is a virtual connection.
That makes things a bit more difficult to leave a lasting impression. However, because you're working with audio and video you have some serious areas of opportunity.
To make good on these areas of opportunity, just focus on all of you visual components of the interview and you'll be fine.
Although there are only a couple of other areas to focus on, the major ones deal with having you're visuals together.
Make A Connection
The challenge with online interviews is being able to leave a lasting impression through a virtual connection.
This can be difficult if you don't know the most important things a hiring manager is looking for during an online interview.
So, you want to be sure you make a connection that lasts throughout their decision making process.
6 Tips To Crush A Virtual Interview:
You want to dress appropriately for the company's culture and the position you're applying for. This may take some research but it's well worth it. Be sure to show up clean, pressed, and well groomed from head to toe. (For more on getting dressed download my style guide below)
The best way to connect with the hiring manager is by naturally smiling and looking into your camera. Don't lean into the camera and stare. Be sure to sit up straight with your shoulders back. You want to appear confident and relaxed. Avoid looking down past the screen. It's okay to look to the left or right briefly when thinking about you answer to a question, but be sure to look back at the camera when delivering your answer.
Even though most video conferencing apps have the option to blur your background, you want to refrain from doing it. Blurring your background gives the hiring manager the impression that you are hiding things. Check the view they will be seeing. Take time to tidy up and maybe place some objects of interest that speak to your personality or skills. Also, be sure your in a quiet, well-lit area with no distractions.
Unless it's absolutely necessary, avoid touching the mouse. You don't want to give the hiring manager you're preoccupied or distracted. You want to be alert giving them your full attention.
Use your hands to make friendly gestures while speaking. This will add new life and more energy to your answers. Do not over do it. You'll want to appear natural with your hand movements.
Make sure you are speaking loud and clear. You'll want to test your mic volume and audio before the interview to make sure you can speak in a comfortable voice to be clearly heard. Also, make sure you don't have any background noises like a loud fan or any other home appliances.
